Last Saturdays results confirm that as we come into the closing stages of West 1, that we're down to a two horse race, with Newton Stewart in pole position.
The top 3 all won, but Carrick and East Kilbride were looking to leaders Newton Stewart slipping up on their travels to Beith to take on Garnock - but it was not to be.
Newton Stewart won 17-5, whilst Carrick had a more comfortable 43-27 win at home against Oban. East Kilbride scraped past Kilmarnock with a 10-7 victory.
Newton Stewarts' win now means EK cannot win the league, but Newton Stewarts' lead over Carrick is cut to three points.
Carrick travel to Helensburgh this Saturday for their last league game of the season, so an anticipated bonus point win will put them two ahead. Newton Stewart face Annan in the Shield Quarter Final this Saturday, and will therefore still have two league games left to play at close of business on Saturday - Oban away on 11th February, and East Kilbride at home the following week.
West 1 has been a good competitive league, and to keep the competition going for another few weeks, it's a must win for Carrick.
At the foot of the table, Helensburgh are well out of touch having lost 51-25 at home to Annan. Kilmarnocks lose bonus point at East Kilbride could be crucial if we end up with a second relegation place.
Killie have two games left - Glens at home this Saturday and Oban away on 25th March. Oban still have four to play, the home game against Newton Stewart on the 11th, Garnock at home on the 18th, Irvine away on the 4th March and Killie at home on the 25th for what might be the decider for the 2nd possible relegation spot (though they might not know that at the time as National 3 is scheduled to run into April).
If Kilmarnock beat Glens this Saturday, then they can move above them in the table, and Glens will then be worrying about Oban picking up a couple of wins - surely Glens couldn't find themselves in the second bottom spot and having to agonise and wait things out - stranger things have happened. They'll be pleased their final game of the season is at home to Helensburgh on the 18th February.
If Glens do find themselves in that 2nd relegation spot, they may well be reviewing those Clubs which have failed to fulfill fixtures during the season and wondering why no points have been deducted.
