With Wigtownshire playing their National Bowl semi-final match on Saturday, this was a chance for Bishopton and Glasgow Uni Medics to close the gap on the league leaders. Bishopton duly delivered, but the Medics failed even to send a team to Mull.
Bishoptons bonus point win at Cowal leaves them 11 points behind Shire, but they have a game in hand, which sets up this weeks encounter between the two as probably the game of the weekend, though there are several other games across West Region that are equally important.
A win for Bishopton is essential if they are to stay in the title hunt. A win for Shire and the title is probably theirs. A Bishopton victory does not decide anything though, as Shire will be at least 6 points ahead (but having played the extra game), so the battle would then roll on to the following week when Shire welcome the Medics.
Following on from being unable to raise a team against Cowal away before Christmas and Bishopton away on 10th March, their non-trip to Mull surely spells the end of their title challenge. They’re currently 13 points behind Wigtownshire (with two games in hand), but they surely face another points deduction. This seasons issues with the Medics fielding a team follow on from last seasons, though at the end of the day, their deduction of four points wasn’t enough to stop them from winning the West 4 title.
The Medics game away at Cowal this weekend will be a crucial test for the Uni boys - it’s still the Easter holidays afterall. No team this weekend, and there will be questions about whether they can see out the season. If this happens, then the race for the title looks completely different once results are reversed out.
The only other game in West 3 at the weekend saw Hyndland win by three points over Moffat - 35-32. The result moves Hyndland ahead of Cowal and now only 6 points behind Lochaber, and with a game in hand.
