West League Update - 14 October 2019

It was another weather affected weekend across West Region, with two games off in the Mens Leagues (both waterlogged pitches), but that didn't stop teh rest of the Clubs, with plenty of action happening across our local communities.

There was a full card scheduled in the Womens League, but we also lost a couple of these games.  These two games however weren't down to the weather, but non-fulfilments due to player numbers.

As it's the school holidays, there were no Under 18 Conference games scheduled.

West 1

The big West 1 game of last weekend was the 1st v 2nd clash between Allan Glens and Stewartry.

Both were unbeaten and both had pretty stingy defences - come 4:45 on Saturday, Glens were still unbeaten and also still had a pretty stingy defence, whilst Stewartry were left licking their wounds and wondering how they managed to come away with zero points despite having a decent share of possession and conceding 59.

The Glens defence was just awesome, didn't matter what Stewartry through at it, it stood resolute, and when an scoring opportunity came their way, they took it, even from within their own half.  It was a dominant display, in both attack and defence.

Our Super 8 entries have Glens as favourites to win the league, and after watching last weekends performance, it's hard to see past them.

East Kilbride were second favourites for promotion in our Super 8 Challenge, but having lost to Stewartry earlier in the season, their visit to Lenzie was a must win at the weekend.

However, Lenzie have been no slouches having lost only once (by a point to Garnock).  It looks to have been a decent game with the lead changing a couple of times. EK won this one 28-22, which gives them their third win of the season, but to date they only have one bonus point from their four games.  It's another defeat for Lenzie, but also another lose bonus point.

Kilmarnock replace Stewartry in second place following a 52 points to 7 win at Cambuslang. This puts them one point ahead of Stewartry and three ahead of Lenzie, though Kilmarnock have played a game more.

It's been a tough start to the season for Cambuslang, having conceded 307 points from their 6 games played, despite this they're on the same points as Strathendrick, Annan and Irvine, who each have one win.  Annan picked up their first win of the season away at Irvine on Saturday, but it was close at 27-20.  It looks like it's going to be a tight old relegation battle.

West 2

With the Oban v Cumnock game off due to a waterlogged, it was a chance for leaders Strathaven to open a gap at the top of the table. This they duly did with a 32-14 try bonus win away at Uddingston.

Dalziel move up to third place with a big 62-15 home win against Paisley. Dalziel remain the only unbeaten team in the league, and won't be too worried about the seven point deficit to the league leaders, as they have two games in hand.

Following last weeks win against Oban, Helenburgh will have travelled to Coatbridge on Saturday with an air of expectancy.  However, it was back to ground with a bump as WD won this one 40 points to 14.  The win means that WD now have a bit breathing space over the bottom three.

In the final West 2 game it was Clydebank who were victorious over Wigtownshire, keeping them a point of WD.

Although Wigtownshire and Helensburgh only have one win apiece, they are 10 points ahead of Uddy, due to their points deduction earlier in the season.  Uddy desperately need to pick up a couple of wins or else they'll be staring relegation in face - Paisley away this weekend looks crucial.

West 3

The usual cautionary note goes with our West 3 table.  This is compiled with a bit of guesswork about the try bonus points, so if the figures are not accurate, let us know and we'll update our spreadsheet.
