West Region Update - 29 January 2022

Results
West 1 West 2 West 3

With Glens having no game this weekend, we have a change at the top of West 1.

There were bonus point wins for both Garnock & Stewartry which sees them move into the top two places, with Glens falling to third.

We don't have too many games left to play, and with only three points seperating the top 3 - it's looking very interesting.  Garnock have the points in the bag, but the other two have games in hand - Stewartry have one game in hand and Glens two.

Played W L D Diff TB LB Points
Garnock 13 11 2 0 309 11 1 56
Stewartry 12 11 1 0 373 9 1 54
Allan Glen's 11 11 0 0 437 9 0 53
Kilmarnock 12 7 5 0 125 6 1 35
East Kilbride 13 7 6 0 72 5 1 34

Lenzie 12 3 9 0 -101 3 3 15
Irvine 8 2 6 0 -183 2 0 7
Strathendrick 12 2 10 0 -410 1 1 7
Cambuslang 9 1 8 0 -159 3 1 5

(p.s. our table at the moment is different from that on the SRU website.  We believe that both Stewartry & Cambuslang should have another try bonus point each from what SRU are currently showing)

We also have a change in fourth & fifth places with Kilmarnock moving ahead of East Kilbride.  Both won their games, but Kilmarnock also picked up a win bonus point.

It's tight at the top of the table, but with Cambuslang picking up a bonus point win away at Irvine, it's even tighter in the relegation battle.

In National 3, both Greenock and Ardrossan again lost, making it increasingly likely that one or other will be relegated to the Regional leagues.  With West 1 currently being a league of 11, a West Club coming down from National 3, would mean two relegated to West 2 to get West 1 back to a league of 10.

There are now only two points between the bottom 3.  Irvine and Cambuslang both have a number of games in hand on Strathendrick, as well as Lenzie and Carrick above them.

The next three rounds of fixtures are a bit disjointed due to the 6 Nations, but they include some crucial games amongst the relegation contenders that could lead to some major changes in places.  They include:
Lenzie v Strathendrick
Cambuslang v Lenzie
Carrick v Irvine
Irvine v Strathendrick
Lenzie v Carrick

Wins will be so valuable, but by the same token, this could be so close that bonus points and points differential may be deciding factors in who will still be playing West 1 rugby next season.

Plenty of West 2 action this weekend, but none of it led to any change of positions.

Our two main title challengers weren't in action as their games were called off, but second place Wigtownshire picked up a bonus point win away at Clydebank, which moves them to within 9 points of Cumnock.

Cumnock & Shire have five games remaining - which includes the pair meeting up in Stranraer on 19th February.  Strathaven are 25 points behind Cumnock, but have four games in hand, so if Shire win against Cumnock on the 19th, Strathaven are still in the title race (assuming they win their games in hand).

In the battle for fourth, Oban Lorne stole a march on Paisley with a win away at The Anchor, but it was a tight one so Paisley pick up a lose bonus.

Dalziel picked up a bonus point win away at Uddingston, to leave them a point closer to Oban.  Paisley have played two games more than both Oban and Dalziel, so its perhaps between those currently in fourth & fifth spot.

Clydebank 14 4 10 0 -129 2 3 21
Uddingston 12 3 9 0 -222 1 3 16
Helensburgh 11 2 8 1 -218 2 1 13
Waysiders/ Drumpellier 8 1 7 0 -192 0 2 -6

In the relegation battle, only Uddingston and Clydebank played.  Helensburghs game v Strathaven was off for covid, whilst Waysiders Drumpellier were unable to field a team away at Cumnock.  Neither Uddy nor Clydebank picked up any points, so the only difference in points comes from the 5 point deduction picked up by WD.

If it's two down to West 3, WD are needing to pick up at least 22 points to catch Uddy - this is looking highly unlikely as their remaining games include Cumnock, Strathaven (twice) and Oban (twice).  This would mean the second relegation spot is between Clydebank, Uddingston and Helensburgh.

Clydebank have the most points in the bag, but have also played the most games (they have four remaining).  Uddy are five behind Clydebank, but have two games more to play, whilst Helensburgh are another three points behind, but have 7 games remaining.

Two of Clydebanks remaining games are against Clubs in the top half of the league, but their final game is WD on 2nd April.  Four of Uddys remaining games are against Clubs in the top half of the league but crucially, they have Helensburgh to play on 2nd April.

Helensburghs remianing games include Cumnock and Strathaven (twice), but these are balanced against having to face WD twice as well as that game against Uddy on 2nd April.

There are plenty of different scenarios we can draw up for this relegation battle with many of them going right down to the wire.  Wins will be like gold dust, but bonus point (both try & lose) as well as the points differential will be just as important - 2nd of April looks like being a cracker.

West 3

Three of the four West 3 games at the weekend were off, two due player numbers and as a result of the weather warning causing ferry issues for Mulls trip to Dunoon.

This means the top 3 remain the same, and the search for the title winnners extends another few weeks as the Medics game v Lanark is rescheduled to 16th April and Bishoptons game v Clydesdale is now due on 19th March.

The one game that did take place has an impact on the battle for fourth.  It was a close one, with Lochaber winning 15 - 14 at Birkmyre.

The win moves Lochaber four points clear of Loch Lomond in fifth, and they're now only 5 behind Bishopton.  The lose bonus puts Birkmyre on the same points as Moffat (5 behind Lochaber), but Birkmyre have the better points differential.

12th February will be a big day in the 4th place battle as Loch Lomond visit Lochaber.  A win for Lochaber will probably secure them fourth place (and an outside chance of 3rd - but that's a long shot), whilst a win for Lomond, and who knows which of the trio will finish fourth.
