West Region Update - 7th March 2022

West 1

Saturday was a day of big results in West 1 with changes in league positions affecting both the promotion and relegation battles.

It's tight at the top of West 1, with Garnock, Stewartry and Glens all duking it out with only a few points between them, and looking like the Championship race might go down to the games towards the end of April when Stewartry host Garnock one week and then the next Glens host Stewartry.

However, Saturdays results reminds them that it's more than just about themselves as Garnock got a bit of shock on their trip to Bellsland, with Kilmarnock taking the victory 29 - 20.

The Garnock loss means Stewartry move top following their a 68 - 7 win in the Chisholm Cup derby match against Annan.  Covid put the Glens game v Cambuslang off, so Stewartry lead Garnock by 3 points and Glens by 6.

It's difficult to name a favourite for the title, as although Stewartry lead the way, Glens have a couple of games in hand.  However, as we metioned early, the April games mean we're going to have to wait a while yet to find our Champion, whilst Clubs like Kilmarnock may yet have a big say in the outcome.

Despite the Scotland game, this Saturday sees a few re-arranged fixtures, which includes Glens visiting Kilmarnock and Stewartry hosting Cambuslang.

Last weekends other game was the relegation contest between Irvine & Strathendrick at Marress.  Whilst Irvine got themselves into a decent lead, Endrick pegged them back to take the victory 41 - 27, with both teams picking up a try bonus.

Highlights - Irvine v Strathendrick

The result moves Endrick ahead of both Cambuslang and Irvine, but Endrick have played three games more than Cambuslang and four more than Irvine.

All three Clubs will be keeping an eye on National 3 as either Greenock Wanderers or Ardrossan coming down would mean that two go down from West 1 to West 2.

Greenock had a win against fellow relegation contenders Perthshire, but Ardrossan lost.  With four games remaining each, both Ardrossan and Greenock are on 12 points, 5 behind Perthshire who have five games left and six behind Strathmore who only have two games remaining.

SRU website shows Cambuslang with 9 points, but by our reckoning, they shoud have a further try bonus point.

West 2

The West 2 promotion battle is a little more clear cut than the West 1 contest.

Bonus point wins each for Cumnock, Wigtownshire and Strathaven means Cumnock are still 8 points clear of Wigotwnshire, but Shire now only two games remaining compared to Cumnocks three.

And whilst Strathaven are currently 29 points off the pace, they are still in the contest as they have five games in hand on Cumnock.  So to take the title, both Shire and Strathaven need Cumnock to lose at least one of their remaining three games - could Cumnocks visit to Dalziel on Saturday be that game?

The contest at the other end of the table is little more complicated though.

If it's one Club relegated down to West 3, then that's WD as they now find themselves on -21 points following another unfulfilled game.

However, with both Ardrossan and Greenock in the National 3 relegation contest, the knock-on effect of either coming back down to the regional leagues is that a second West 2 will go down to West 3 - which makes things more complex.

Uddingstons home win against Paisley increases their gap over Helensburgh to seven points and puts them within five of Clydebank.

Uddingston have five games remaining, Clydebank have one and Helensburgh have six games to play.

Clydebanks remaining game is WD, whilst both Helensburgh & Uddingston have two games against the top three.  Interestingly, Uddy are scheduled to visit Helensburgh on 2nd April which looks like being crucial in that contest, however WD may have a further part to play in the contest.

WD have managed to play only 8 games this season, so have 10 remaining, but with their last four games being unfulfilled, the Championship Committee must surely have a bit of a dilemma about what to do if they go another couple of game without playing.

We will soon get to the stage where WD run out of weeks to get all their games played, and this would affect both promotion and relegation.

Uddy have already played WD twice, but Helensburgh still have two games to play against them and Clydebanks sole remaining game is WD.  At the other end of the table, both Cumnock and Strathaven still have them to play (Strathaven twice).

Games this weekend include Cumnocks visit to Dalziel, Uddingston welcoming Oban Lorne and Strathaven hosting WD in a Lanarkshire derby.
