West 1 Update - 17 February 2017

In the weekends big news, Newton Stewart secured the league title with a game to spare following a tight 18-15 win up at Oban.  Rugby in the south west of Scotland seems to be healthy as Newton Stewart follow Stewartrys promotion a few weeks ago.

Helensburghs tough season continued at the weekend when they visited Annan, as they were on the wrong end of a 94-0 result.  Helensburgh are sure to be happy to see the end of this season this weekend, but an away game at Allan Glens probably isn't going to see any change in their fortunes.  It can't have been enjoyable, having conceded 794 in 17 games, whilst scoring only 268.

Their win against Helensburgh gives Annan the outside chance of overtaking Garnock to finish in fourth place.  Both have one game left, Garnock away at Oban this weekend, and Annan have Irvine at home on the 4th March.  To finish fourth, Annan need a bonus point win and a Garnock defeat with not bonus point, along with a 15 point difference swing. Not beyond the realms of possibility, as Oban are looking for a win in their search to avoid the potential second relegation spot (which depends on how many West teams come down from National 3).

The lose bonus point picked up against Newton Stewart could be crucial for Oban as it means a four try win against Garnock this weekend puts them on the same points as Kilmarnock and, with a game in hand.  Oban also have a better points difference than Kilmarnock.

The following week, Oban are away at Irvine, with the final game of the season on 25th March seeing Kilmarnock travel to Oban.  This will surely be the decider as to who finishes in that dreaded ninth spot, and the long wait for the conclusion of National 3.

A couple of bonus point wins before the 25th would surely be enough for Oban to finish above Killie, but anything less and a win for Kilmarnock in the decider could see them in eighth place and a guarantee of West 1 rugby next season.
