West 1 Review - Week 4 2017/18

In West 1 last season there was plenty of competitive interest at both top and bottom of the league, and early results suggest it will be no different again this season.

Carrick were last seasons runners-up with East Kilbride and Garnock competitive earlier on, so we're expecting these three to be challenging again this season, but after three weeks, it's Allan Glens setting the pace with three bonus point wins from three.

Last season, Glens were bottom half, winning only 7 from 18 fixtures, with points scored for the whole season of 379 and only 5 win bonus points.  This season they've already scored 213 points from their three games whilst conceding only 36, so a big improvement on last season.  But before we get carried away, we should note that their wins to date have been against Oban, Annan and Irvine (who didn't exactly set the heather alight last season), so this weekends game against East Kilbride will be more of a test, and a victory will confirm they're indeed contenders for the title.

EK are currently in fifth, with 2 wins from 3, having lost to Garnock, so they'll be keen on a win, else they might feel they already have too much work to do in the title contest.

Like Glens, both Carrick and Garnock are unbeaten, and they'll be expecting to carry this on this weekend.  Both have home games, Carrick welcome Irvine, whilst Garnock welcome Greenock.

Irvine are still looking for their first league win of the season, having lost to Glens, Cambuslang and Annan.

Having come down from National 3, Greenock will be keen to regain National status, and two wins from three suggest might they're in the running, however a heavy defeat to Carrick suggests a bit of a gap - a win against Garnock is therefore essential.

Last season, Helensburgh struggled with only 1 win from 18 games - unfortunately things aren't looking any brighter this season - three losses, 29 points for, 112 against.  Getting some points on the board soon is essential, so they'll be keen for something from this weekends visit of Cambuslang.  Cambuslang themselves have won one league game following their step up from West 2, but they do seem to be competitive, similar in fact to the other promoted team, Stewartry, who also have 1 win from three.  Stewartry travel to Kilmarnock this weekend.

Helensburgh aren't the only Clubs with an early season struggle with neither Irvine nor Oban having any wins to their names.  Oban ran Garnock close first game of the season, but results have gone rapidly downhill - conceding 109 against Kilmarnock and then 76 at home to Glens.  Their trip to Annan this Saturday will be a "long" journey.

We're going for a wins for Garnock (lose bonus for Greenock), Cambuslang, Annan, Glens (EK lose bonus), Kilmarnock and Carrick.
