At the weekend, we had four of the top five in direct competition, so we were always going to get some sort of shuffling of the pack in West 2. What we ended up with was Cumnock & Lenzie swapping places and Endrick continuing their leisurely saunter up the table. At the foot, a big win for Loch Lomond should be enough for them to be clear of the 2nd relegation spot.
Leaders Paisley were away at fourth place Uddingston, where a win for the home side would probably have meant a move up to second, but it was a convincing 60-26 win for Paisley, so it’s they who strengthen their grip at the top of the table.
Adding to the interest in the league was second place Lenzies trip to third place Cumnock. Whoever won this contest would be guaranteed second, and if Paisley lost to Uddy, then the top slot. It was a close contest and only one score separated the two title challengers, with Cumnock winning 10-5.
For most of the season, Strathendrick have been hanging about mid-table due to their fixture backlog, but as things are gradually playing out, they’re quietly progressing up the table - though there was nothing quiet about their result on Saturday, a roaring 74 nil win against Waysiders.
Cumnock are two points behind Paisley, but with a game in hand. Lenzie are in third, four behind but have played a game more, whilst Strathendrick are six behind, but with three games in hand.
A review of the league table would probably suggest Lenzie are now out of the running (trailing on points and having played more games) but their remaining fixtures make things interesting. Lenzies six remaining games are against teams in the bottom half of the league. Leaders Paisley, have Strathendrick to play twice, as well as Cumbernauld and Uddingston. Cumnocks’ games include Cumbernauld, Strathendrick and Uddingston, whilst Strathendrick have still to face Paisley twice, Cumnock, Cumbernauld and Uddingston.
We picked Strathendrick for the title, but realise there’s loads still to play for, with any of the top four having a realistic chance of winning the title.
At the foot of the table, Birkmyres torrid West 2 experience continued as they went down 33-5 at Cumbernauld. Loch Lomond built on their previous weeks win against Millbrae with a crucial 8-7 victory over Strathaven. This moves Lomond ahead of Clydebank and 14 points clear of Millbrae who are in the second relegation spot.
The crucial tie between Clydebank and Millbrae was off as the pitch hadn’t recovered from the previous weeks weather. Clydebank are 11 points ahead of Millbrae, but Millbrae have two games in hand.
Clydebank have an ominous looking next few weeks of fixtures; their next four games are Lenzie, Uddingston, Lenzie and Paisley. Perhaps more importantly though, their last four games are Strathaven, Loch Lomond, Waysiders and this weekends rescheduled game against Millbrae. Should Millbrae win their next couple of games (Loch Lomond away and Waysiders at home), then it’s very much game on for that second relegation spot.
However, as with West 1, Lomond, Clydebank and Millbrae (and perhaps even Waysiders) will be keeping an eye on the relegation battle in National 3 to see if Dalziel can gain enough points to avoid the drop to the Regional set-up, which would then probably mean only one down from West 2.
