Following last weeks West 3 league reshuffle, Wigtownshire found themselves in pole position for the title, with each of the three title contenders now having played the same number of games, and with Glasgow Uni Medics and Bishopton scheduled to play each other on Saturday, this was a chance for Shire to stretch their lead over at least one of their challengers. But, as it turned out, there were only two games played at the weekend in West 3.
Wigtownshire won their home game against Hyndland, 73 nil, whilst the game between their title challengers was off as Glasgow Uni Medics were unable to raise a team. This is the second time this season the Medics have been unable to raise a team, the first time they received a 3 point deduction, so another points deduction will surely follow.
Shire are 11 points clear of Bishopton, and probably at least this ahead of the Medics, but both challengers now have a game in hand on the leaders.
A further points deduction for the Medics means it’s probably now a two horse race between Wigtownshire and Bishopton - who are due to face each other on 7th April. However, the Medics do still have them both still to play, so if they can manage to get a team on the pitch, they're not out of it yet.
A quick look at the fixtures suggests that for Shire their main challenge will come against Bishopton and the Medics, but this will be doing a doing a disservice to the rest of the league - i.e. this weekend they host Lochaber, who beat them 25-11 earlier in the season. We're penciling in a win for Shire, but as their previous encounter shows, it can't be guaranteed.
Bishopton have a free weekend again, whilst the Medics welcome Mull.
Wigtownshire are currently our pick for the title, but if Bishopton can get the win on the 7th April, it puts the pressure on Shire to get a result the following week against the Medics - no win for Shire here, and it could go down to the final game of the season on 12th May.
The only other game this weekend saw Shawlands win 6-3 away at Cowal. This result moves them further clear of Lochaber in the battle for fourth.
