We have three Saturdays of the season left, and only now has the West 2 title race been whittled down to three Clubs.
Lenzie finished their season with a bonus point win away at Strathaven which means they end up on 78 points. Cumnock also had a bonus point win, and they too are on 78 points but have two games left to play. Whilst in the game of the day, Strathendrick came out on top at home against Paisley, but with neither gaining a bonus point.
A 20 points to nil victory to Strathendrick perhaps, but there wasn’t a great deal between the teams. Both sides had chances to score which were snubbed out by the defences, but looking back, the big difference was Endricks ability to steal line-out ball when Paisley were in a dominant position.
Paisley have one game left, but on 72 points they are now out of the title challenge and the race for the 2nd promotion spot.
Endrick are two points behind the leaders, but they have four games to play.
Cumnocks remaining games are Birkmyre (away) and WD at home, which we’d expect to yield them a couple of wins. Endricks games are Birkmyre away this weekend, followed by Birkmyre again the following Wednesday, and then Loch Lomond and Millbrae away.
A couple of bonus point wins and Cumnock will finish on 88 points. Three wins for Endrick and they too will be on 88 points, so they’ll be looking for a bonus point somewhere so they don’t have to worry about getting a result against the in-form Millbrae.
It’s looking like the title for Endrick and the 2nd promotion spot for Cumnock.
In the relegation battle, it was a win for Millbrae whilst it was Loch Lomond who took the result in the A82 el Classico against Clydebank, though Clydebank did pick up a lose bonus point. All of which means that WD fall further behind their challengers for the dreaded second relegation spot.
Loch Lomond and Clydebank are now safe from relegation, so it’s between Millbrae and WD with Millbrae 8 points ahead. Millbrae have five games remaining and WD have three away games.
WD need at least two wins, with their first chance of victory coming this weekend away at Clydebank. Win this, and their next game becomes a massive Wednesday night trip to Millbrae. However, Millbrae will be looking at their next three games (Cumbernauld, Lomond and Clydebank) as opportunities to pick up points - three points of any description from these and WD will need three wins from three.
Come 5pm Saturday we will know if the second drop spot becomes active, as the National 3 relegation decider between Haddington and Dalziel takes place this weekend. A win for Dalziel, and they stay in National 3, a loss and they drop to West 1, which will have the knock-on effect of two Clubs being relegated from West 2 to West 3.
