West 2: Oban Lorne v Loch Lomond

by Andrew Johnston
On a wet day in Oban the home team huffed and puffed and eventually managed to secure the bonus point victory against a spirited Lomond Team!

The Heavy Lomond pack dominated the early exchanges but Oban threatened every time they had the ball! A couple of early penalties got them in front and then 2 tries before half time saw them take a 18-0 lead!

Lomond came back and scored a try either side of halftime to bring it back to 18-12!

Oban made a few changes and got on the front and Full back Craig Wright scored a 2nd half hat trick to take Oban out to 35-12.

West 2: Lenzie v Uddingston

by WeegieRugby
Having scored nearly 500 points in the league between them so far this season, the table topping game between Lenzie and Uddy was set to be a cracker - but this was a scrappy afair, with lots of interruptions for scrums and penalties so neither team built any momentum.

Lenzie looked to have scored early on from an overlap off the back of a scrum in the Uddy 22, but the defender went for the intercept and knocked-on.  A penalty try may have been on the refs mind, but it was instead just a card and a kick to the corner.  From the line-out, the Lenzie hooker regained the ball as it bobbled about at the front of the line-out and was awarded the try as he launched himself at the line.

Uddy responded with penalty on the Lenzie 22, which gave a half time score of 5-3 after a half where it was the defences who dominated.

Early in the second half, Uddy took the lead with another penalty goal, but from there Lenzie started to dominate territory and possession thanks to some great kicking from their 10 which pinned Uddy in their 22.  However home team struggled to make any sort of dent in the Uddy defence.

With about 10 minutes to go, Lenzie won a series of penalties inside the Uddy 22 and chose scrums which they were starting to dominate.  The ref lost patience with the Uddy scrum and awarded the penalty try.

Uddy had their chance to take the victory in the closing stages after a kick was misfielded by the Lenzie fullback, who then looked as though he had taken out the chasing Uddy player.  Too far out for a penalty try, but it would have been an interesting chase between the Uddy winger and the covering defender - had the ref allowed it.  He didn't blowing up the penalty immediately.

At the final whistle, Lenzie had won 12-6, moving into top slot ahead of Uddy.

Both Clubs have shown in previous weeks they can score bucket loads of tries, but this week, they demonstrated the strength of the defences.

West 2: Wigtownshire v Helensburgh

An excellent display of rugby from both sides, given the terrible matchday weather conditions.

Shire got off to the better start, with prop Brett Walker ploughing over from close range after patient build up play. Helensburgh got back into the game with a penalty after an infringement at the breakdown. The sides were evenly matched in the pack, however the Helensburgh fly half was controlling the game well and had a number of menacing breaks.

Into the second half and Shire were first to score once again, with Andy Farquhar charging down a Helensburgh clearance before Ruari Pirrie finished off the score in the corner. Helensburgh dug deep and got themselves a try at the death after sustained pressure in the Shire 22’, to earn a deserved bonus point.

A thoroughly enjoyable game, given the conditions, with some great rugby being played by both teams.
