West 1 Update - 3rd March 2019

Due to the National Shield semi-final, we had a restricted fixture list in West 1 this week, but that just means we have another change at the top of the table.

Greenock and Glens were scheduled to be playing each other on Saturday, but Greenock had the small matter of a shield semi-final match to play against Strathmore.  By the looks of things this went right down to the wire, with Greenock booking a place at finals day at Murrayfield with a 21-20 victory - well done to you guys, but it's back to league business now.

With Glens and Greenock not playing, East Kilbride took the opportunity to take top spot again and open up the gap to their two challengers for the title with a 61 - 21 home victory against Strathendrick.

EK lead Glens by a point, but they only have one game left as opposed to Glens who have two.  Greenock are 12 points behind EK, but they have four games remaining.

EK host Garnock this week, which should be a cracker, whilst Glens are away at Strathendrick and Greenock are away at Annan.

We're expecting both Glens and Greenock to win, but the win is perhaps not enough.  If they want the title, they also need the bonus point.

In the EK game, we're going for EK purely from the point of view of wanting to see the title race go as far as possible.  In fact, we're hoping they pick up the bonus point as well, so they finish on 93 points.

From the "we don't have anything better to do with our time so we've come up with an outrageous scenario department", we've plotted the ideal situation  - Glens win with a bonus point on Saturday, but lose with a bonus point at Fort Matilda on the 20th, leaving them on 93 points. And then Greenock have four wins, but only one with a bonus point, leaving them also on, guess what, 93 points - from there, we're guessing it's down to points difference between EK, Glens and Greenock.

But anyway, back to the real world, perhaps more likely it all just comes down to that game on the 20th April at Fort Matilda when Greenock host Glens.

Elsewhere in the league we had a big 92-12 win for Irvine (surprisingly similar to the Predictor Odds) against Cumnock, whilst Garnocks 40 points to 22 victory over Dalziel, appears to have relegated Dalziel - however, we understand that Dalziel picked up a four try bonus, so by our reckoning (based on last weeks SRUs league tables), Dalziel should be on 16 points and not 15, meaning that bonus point wins in each of their remaining games will put them on the same points as Cambuslang, but with a better points difference.

Dalziel this week though have to welcome Irvine, who as we say put 92 points past Cumnock last week.  In the interest of symmetry to balance the scenario where the title is decided on points difference, so too we'd like to go with a similar situation at the foot of the table where the second relegation spot is also decided by points difference - but you know what, we just can't see past Irvine picking up a victory this weekend (and anyway, maybe the SRUs leagues table right, and Dalziel are already down - assuming of course we are actually moving to leagues of 10 next season).
