West Region Update - 6th October 2019

Well what a weekend of results: unexpected results, here, there and everywhere.  We have perhaps become a little lax due to the success rate of the Predictor Challenge so far, but this week is a bit of kick up the backside, and once the stats are produced, the Predictor report card will undoubtely say "must do better".

But what's bad for the Predictor, just makes the league campaign a little more exciting.

Weekends West Results:

Women

West 1

Allan Glens remain top of West 1, maintaining their 100% league record with victory at Annan, however, following things on Twitter, this looked pretty tight.  With about 15 minutes remaining, the score was 19-18 to the visitors, so the chance of shock looked to be on the card.  Annan were unable to add to their tally, but a couple of scores for Glens meant they took this one 29-18.

Stewartry are also unbeaten, but trial Glens in the league table by one point.  They had a big win against one of the pre-season promotion contenders (and strong pre-match favourites), East Kilbride.

Across their four games league games so far, Stewartry have conceded only 35 points, which will stand them in good stead when they visit the league leaders next weekend.

Last seasons West 2 champions Lenzie are in third place, having won three from four, with Kilmarnock in fourth.  Lenzie won against a resurgent Cambuslang, with Kilmarnock winning 17-12 against Garnock (another surprise for our Predictor entrants).

Our Super8 Predictor have Garnock and East Kilbride as the nearest challengers for Glens for the West 1 title, but could they be out of the running already?

Annan might be at the foot of the table (still looking for their first win), but the weekends game against Glens suggests they should not be under-estimated. Just above Annan, we have Irvine, Cambuslang and Strathendrick. They have one win each - Strathendrick picking up their win against Irvine at the weekend.  It's probably too early in the season to be saying this, but it's looking like it's going to be a tight battle at the foot of the table, where a couple of wins will make a huge difference, and bonus points will be just as important.

This weekend coming we have the top two facing each other, and Lenzie hosting East Kilbride. Whoever wins at the Bearyards will be top, whilst a win for Lenzie could see them move into second.  However, it's a must win for EK if they have any hope of remaining in the title race.

At the foot of the table it's Irvine hosting Annan.  A must win for Annan, else they could find themselves separated in 10th spot. In the other West 1 games we have Cambuslang hosting Kilmarnock (where a win for Kilmarnock could see them move into second) and Garnock hosting Strathendrick.

West 2

Prior to the weekend, Oban Lorne sat atop the table.  They were unbeaten, and had scored loads of points, but that record took a bit of beating on Saturday.

The Predictor Challenge had Oban as one of the strongest favourites in West Region at the weekend, but with Helensburgh leading almost from start to finish, it looks like it was well deserved.

The result means that Strathaven replace Oban at the top of the table, but it doesn't look like they had things all their own way against Paisley.  The scoreboard looked to swing this way and that, but a couple of tries in the final quarter were enough to give Strathaven the bonus point win.

Cumnock had a comfortable win against Uddingston (who are still looking for their first win), and moves them up to third, with Paisley another couple of points behind in fourth.

Dalziels 17-10 win at Clydebank means they remain the only unbeaten team in the league. They're currently in fifth place, seven points behind, but they do have two games in hand.

At the foot it's Uddy, and ahead of them we have Helensburgh, Wigtownshire and Waysiders Drumpellier separated by a point.  WDs win against Wigtownshire was another Predictor "surprise", which moved WD ahead of Shire in the table.

We have a few interesting looking games this weekend.

Second placed Oban are hosting third place Cumnock, whilst Dalziel welcome Paisley, neither will be foregone conclusions.

Strathaven travel to Uddy, who will need to find some of last seasons form if they are to give us an upset.  WD host Helensburgh for another tight looking game, whilst Clydebank host Wigtownshire, which look's almost a must win for both.

West 3

The unexpected results kept on coming in West 3.

Strongest favourites of the day in West 3 were Uni Medics away at Loch Lomond - a somewhat unfair stat as Lomond, like Uni Medics were unbeaten this season.  Come the end of the game, it was Lomond who remained unbeaten following a tight 14-10 win.

Like Medics and Lomond, Mull were also unbeaten prior to Saturdays games, but they lost this record with their "derby" game at Lochaber.  Lochabers 38-19 victory moves them into second place behind Loch Lomond in pool "g".

In pool "oui" Mull remain top with Uni Medics in second, but Bishopton and Birkmyre are closing in on them following away wins against Moffat and Cumbernauld.

In the remaining games, Lanark picked up their first win of the season, whilst Shawlands were unable to raise a team to travel to Cowal.

We've put together a table for West 3, but we're not 100% sure of try bonus points, so let us know if we need to update it (did Lanark & Moffat pick up four tries this weekend).

In this weekends West 3 games, Uni Medics travel to Lanark, whilst Birkmyre host Bishopton.  Mull have the weekend off.

Pool "g" leaders are away at Cowal, whilst Lochaber host Hyndland.  In the final game, Cumbernauld travel to Moffat.
