It was a tight one in the West Regional Shield final at the Torrance House Arena, with a half time score of 7-5 in East Kilbrides favour, and 10-8 at 60 minutes. It was tight right to the end, with EK kicking a penalty with a couple of minutes remaining to make it 13-8, but Glens were unable to find a winning score before time was blown.
It was another close contest in the Bowl final at Banavie. The Medics led 3 nil at half time, whilst Lochaber scored all the points in the second half, to win it 6-3.
With conditions being difficult, neither match sounds like a classic, but that won’t stop EK and Lochaber celebrating hard before getting back to league business this weekend.
Our best wishes go with them in the next round of the National competitions.
West 1
With East Kilbride and Glens duking it out at Torrance House, it was a restricted West 1 fixture card on Saturday.Kilmarnock continue to lead the way following victory over Irvine. The gap in their respective league placings tell one story, but the twitter updates suggest this was squeaky bum time for Kilmarnock.
Irvine lead 12 - 7 at half-time, before Kilmarnock took the lead early after the break, but with only four points between them with 10 minutes to go, this would have made for a tense ending. Kilmarnock took the victory 26-20, which sees them move onto 43 points, 7 ahead of Glens, though Glens do have three games in hand.
It was a crucial lose bonus point for Irvine, allowing them to move ahead of Cambuslang in the relegation battle.
In their last outing, Irvine drew with Garnock (at Garnock) and have now picked up a lose bonus point at Kilmarnock - it’s looking like they have found a bit of last seasons form.
It was an interesting looking game at Greenlaw. Whichever Club won between Stewartry and Lenzie knew they would be up to third in the table. Neither Club are scoring loads of points, but by the same token, neither are they conceding that many, so it had the makings of a tight affair, and that it was, with an 11-5 victory for Stewartry.
Stewartry are up to third, 10 points behind Kilmarnock, but with a game in hand.
Garnock move up to fourth with a 22 nil victory at Cambuslang and are 14 points behind Kilmarnock, but with three games in hand, they’re still very much in the Championship race. As are East Kilbride, who although they’re 19 points behind the leaders, they have four games in hand.
At the half-way point in the season, it's looking like we have five Clubs with a stake in the Championship battle, whilst in the relegation battle, we have three.
Strathendrick are sitting in 10th, a point behind Cambuslang and two behind Irvine, but they have a game and two games in hand respectively.
The three Clubs only have a win a piece, and they’re each averaging about 14 points for a game, so any victory picked up will be extremely valuable, whilst bonus points could be significant in the relgation battle.
West 2
The big game in West 2 took place at Whiteshawgate with leaders Strathaven hosting second place Dalziel.Prior to the weekend, both had lost a game each, been scoring plenty of points whilst being pretty stingy when it came to conceding points - it looked like being a tight one.
A half-time score of 11-5 to the visitors kept this theme going, but with the wind behind them in the second half, Dalziel took their opportunities adding a try and conversion and a couple of penalties to give them a 24-5 victory.
This closes the gap at the top. Strathaven are still in pole position but Dalziel are now only seven points behind and with two games in hand.
As well as our 1st v 2nd match-up, there was also a 3rd v 4th contest going on with Paisley travelling to Cumnock.
In this one Cumnock got themselves into a 22-3 half-time lead, so things were looking reasonably comfortable for them, however Paisley came back strongly second half with a couple of tries.
Cumnock held on for the victory, but at 25-18 it would have been much closer than they were expecting at half time.
Cumnock are on the same points as Dalziel (so seven behind Strathaven), though they have played two games more than Dalziel.
There’s three contenders for the title, followed by five Clubs clear of the relegation battle, but just too far off the pace for the title. Four of these five had a match up with each other on Saturday.
The league table, and recent form, suggested the Clydebank v WD game would be the closest whilst Oban would probably be favourites on the road at Wigtownshire - but we were wrong on both counts.
Clydebank had a comfortable 39 nil win, whilst it was Wigtownshire who came out on top against early season title contenders Oban Lorne - but it was close at 13-12.
These results mean we have a shuffling of positions in the middle of the table.
Clydebank move up to fifth ahead of Oban Lorne (and now only two points behind Paisley, but with a game in hand) whilst Wigtownshire swap places with WD, only four points behind Oban, though Oban do have a couple of games in hand.
Our final game was between our two West 2 relegation contenders, Helensburgh and Uddingston.
It’s been a struggle for both so far this season, though Burgh do have a couple of wins to their name but Uddy were still winless - well until Saturday that was.
It sounds like a tight affair in conditions which didn’t make for much of the way of crowd pleasing rugby, but it was Uddy who appear to have been the more determined and came away with their first win of the season - 27-10, which means they close the gap to their rivals to seven points.

Only one game survived the weather in West 3 at the weekend, which saw Loch Lomond cement their lead at the top of Conference A with a 36-3 on their travels to Moffat.Other weekend fixtures:
