World Rugby 7s Series - 2019/20

Vancouver:

Same teams in the Pool stages as last week in LA - we lost three from three, so here's hoping for an improvement.

Alas, not a great start with a 33-19 defeat against Australia - so many similarities to LA.

And the pattern continues with a 28-12 defeat to USA in game 2.

The LA sequence has been broken, but only just. A 19 each draw against Samoa means we don't lose all three pool games again.  However it looks a though it could've been so different as we were 19-5 up with a couple minutes left on the clock, but still managed to concede a couple of tries.

Onwards and upward though, moving into day 2 with a 9th place quarter final against Argentina (currently ranked 8th).

Day 2 gets of  to a great start with a 28-17 win over 8th ranked Argentina to set up a semi-final place match against Kenya (who we beat last week).

What a difference a day makes - day 2 - two wins out of two with a 12 - 7 victory over Kenya, setting up a 9th place play-off final against France.

The positive results continued into the final with a 12 - 7 win over France, to give the best set of results this Series.  Six games played with three and a draw, earning us 8 ranking points, which move us above Kenya into 11 place.

There's a six week break now before the London leg.

LA Confidential:

Another difficult looking pool stage for Scotland in the LA leg of the Word 7s Series.  We met two of our opponents (Australia & USA) in the Pool stage in Sydney and came up short.  In fact we've lost to both of them each time we've met them in this Series.

We're two points ahead of Samoa in the overall standings, so this will also be a toughie.

Not a great result to kick-off for Scotland with a 31 - 7 defeat to Australia, even though they were leading 7-5 at half-time.

Not a great set of results overnight for us, losing to both USA and Samoa, but at least we get a 2nd chance with the tournie format reverting to that of last year, so we get another couple of games on day 2, instead of just reverting straight to a play-off place.

Day 2 unfortunately hasn't seen any improvement in our fortunes with a 24-7 defeat to Canada, which sets-up a 13th place semi-final match against Korea.

The Scottish Rugby twitter feed lit up with a try fest in the 13th placed semi-final match against Korea, with us scoring 7 tries (Alec Coombes claiming four) on the way to a 45-5 victory and setting up a final match against Kenya.

Scotland claim 13th place in LA, following an extra winning try from Alec Coombes, giving a 29 - 24 result.

This leg of the tournie was won by South Africa, who overcame Fiji in the final 29 - 24.

Scotland picked up 4 points in the Standings, moving us into joint 11th on 29 points with Kenya.

Not long to wait for the sixth round of the Series, next weekend in Vancouver, where we have ended up with the same teams in the Pool as this weekend.

The Sydney Scenes:

The pool stages of the Sydney tournie didn't going too well for Scotland with no wins, but the draw with Japan gave us third in the pool on points difference.  11th place was secured with a win over Wales.

Fiji won the gold medal with a 12-5 win over South Africa.

The six points gained for the 11th place finish move us up one place to 12th in the overall standings.

The next round of the Series takes place in Los Angeles on 29th Feb / 1st March, with Scotland drawn against Australia, USA and Samoa.
