Fixtures - 11th December 2021

West 1

Glens took a big step toward fulfilling their West 1 title ambitions on Saturday with a tightly fought win against second-placed Garnock. By the sounds of it, it was nip & tuck right down to the final few moments, when a penalty try in the last few minutes was all that separated them at the final whistle, giving Glens the victory 25-18.

West Results - 4th December 2021

Glens are now 10 wins from 10 outings putting them 12 points clear of Garnock, but Garnock do have a game in hand.  With a 57-15 win away at Irvine, Stewartry are also still very much in this battle - they move up to second, 9 points behind Glens with a game in hand, and the pair are scheduled to meet on the first game after the Christmas break.

Glens may be slight favourites at the moment as they have the points in the bag, but it looks like it's going to be close.  Glens also know that Garnock and Stewartry have still to play each other twice.

Next weekend, Stewartry host Lenzie, Garnock host East Kilbride and Glens are away to Kilmarnock - they each won the equivalent fixture from the first half of the season, so will be looking for the same again, but also with bonus points.

A home win for East Kilbride against Annan keeps them in fourth place, six points behind Garnock.  They have now had fours in a row and will be keen to make it five to close the gap on their hosts on Saturday.

Kilmarnock are fifth (further five points behind) following another tight contest.  This time there was only two points between them and their hosts Lenzie with the scoreline finishing 13-11.

That win, and Annan's defeat at East Kilbride, means Kilmarnock now have a 5 point gap over Annan, but Annan do have two games in hand.

Annan this weekend hosts bottom team Cambuslang, so will be looking at the possibility of moving up one slot if the results go to form.

Despite losing, Lenzie move up one place as Carrick had no game.  They're both on 17 points, with three wins each.  Lenzie have a difficult ask down at Stewartry, whilst Carrick travel to Fintry to take on second-bottom team Strathendrick - this is a massive game in the relegation fight. When the pair met at Glebe Park at the start of the season, Carrick held on for a 27 - 23 victory, but it was tight right up to the final whistle.

Carrick v Strathendrick - September 2021

Endricks game at the weekend at Cambuslang was abandoned following an injury, so whilst they are 14 points behind Carrick, they do have two games in hand.  A win for Endrick on Saturday and Carrick will need to be cautious about that possible second relegation spot which would also draw Irvine more into that battle as they are currently 7 ahead of Endrick, but have played a game less.

Irvine have no game this weekend whilst Cambuslang continue to search for their first win of the season down at Violetbank to take on 6th placed Annan.

With regards to the relegation battle, we've been reminded there are only 10 teams in National 3 this season, so only one team to be relegated to the Regional Leagues this season .  Unfortunately, both Ardrossan and Greenock are in that battle (Greenock lost to Ardrossan at the weekend, whilst Strathmore beat Hillhead, leaving Greenock 7 behind at the foot of the table).

If there's a West club relegated from National 3, then we'll have two Clubs relegated from West 1 to 2, and two relegated from 2 to 3, whilst there will be only one promotion spot from each league.

West 2

Following poor weather on Friday night, Cumnocks game at Uddingston was called off, whilst WD were unable to raise a team for their game at Clydebank, leaving only two West 2 games played at the weekend.

We had a tight 10-7 game at Glencruiten which Wigtownshire came out the better of their hosts.  This result moves them into second, one point ahead of Strathaven, but Strathaven do have two games in hand.

Oban Lorne remain in fourth but are now getting separated from the top 3.

In the other game, Paisley took the points against Helensburgh, to move them ahead of Dalziel.  Helensburgh remain in eighth, two points behind Uddingston, and with a game in hand.

WD get another points deduction to leave them 12 points behind Clydebank - they do have three games in hand, but it's looking increasingly likely that they'll be playing West 3 next season.

That possible second relegation slot is still very much open for contest with only six points between Dalziel in sixth and Clydebank in ninth.

This weekend leaders Cumnock host Clydebank, which will be a difficult ask for the visitors, especially considering Cumnock are scoring so many points (516 from 10 games).

Strathaven host Oban, which we've got as West 2 game of the day, whilst Wigtownshire host Paisley.

But also up for contention for game of the day we have WD hosting Dalziel in the North Lanarkshire derby, and Helensburgh hosting Uddingston.  So with four of the relegation contenders playing each other, there's plenty of scope for some shuffling of positions before we break for Christmas.

West 3

A win at Banavie for Cumbernauld at the weekend, gives us a change at the top of West 3.  Uni Medic had a free weekend which Cumbernauld made the most of, but it was a close one, winning 10 - 7 against Lochaber.

Cumbie & Medics are both on 38 points, but Cumbernauld have a better points difference however, Medics do have two games in hand.

Lochaber will be glad to see the back of December, as this is the second week running they've lost by three points, following their defeat at Bishopton. If those two narrow defeats had gone their way, they would be right up there in the title fight.

Moffat recovered from their sore one last week by beating Birkmyre at Holm Park 10 points to nil.  This moves them ahead of Birkmyre by a single point, though Birkmyre do have a game in hand.

In the weekends only other game, Bishopton won 28 nil away at Lanark.

Cumbernauld and Medics look clear of the rest, but Cumbie have only three games remaining, whilst Bishopton have five and Lochaber six.  The title might be beyond them, but second-place (and a potential promotion to West 2 should Ardrossan and Greenock avoid the drop from National 3) is still possible.

We've got a full fixture card this weekend (though Medics are again idle), Cumbernauld host bottom team Lanark, Bishopton host Hyndland and Lochaber have an awkward looking fixture at Birkmyre, who are only two points behind them.

With only four points between them, we have another tight looking contest with Moffat travelling to Bonhill to take on Loch Lomond.

We won't see a change at the top of the table, but we may see some shuffling of positions from third to seventh.

Our remaining two games might also see a shake-up of positions at the foot of the table.

Isle of Mull welcome Shawlands - with only one win apiece, there's two points between them.  Neither are scoring very many, so don't expect a try fest, but this could go either way.

In our last game Cowal host Clydesdale.  Clydesdale are on the same points as Shawlands and four ahead of Cowal. A win for Cowal could see them jump several places, whilst Shawlands, Clydesdale and Mull all have the chance (depending on each others results) to top the bottom half of the table (it almost looks like West 4 from yesteryear) at the Christmas break.
