West 1 Results - 4th December 2016

It's not that it needed it, but West 1 got an extra shot of excitement over the weekend.

What was already a close contest, is now even tighter thanks to Carrick beating league leaders East Kilbride 27-20.  Second place Newton Stewart won 51 nil on their travels to Kilmarnock which means we have a definite three way contest with 6 points separating the contenders.

The results leave Newton Stewart only two points behind East Kilbride, but with a game in hand, and Carrick another four off the pace.

We had two games off, Irvine v Oban and Allan Glens v Helensburgh, but no reports yet as to the reasons.  The fact that no team in the West Regional Leagues have been deducted points this season for unfulfilled fixtures might now start to be an issue, with the potential that it will impact on the who gets relegated from West 1 (as well as impacting the promotion place in West 4 following a couple of non-games there at the weekend).

The final West 1 game of the weekend saw 4th place Garnock travel to 6th place Annan, and it looks like a real nailbiter with a 3 nil victory in Annans favour, bringing Annan onto the same points as Allan Glens.

The weekend results in National 3 now mean that Dalziel are only 5 points ahead of the third relegation place, which has the knock-on effect of widening the contender list in the West 1 relegation battle.  With only five points separating Kilmarnock in seventh and Oban in ninth, a couple of victories will make a huge difference, but past years have shown that bonus points and points deducted can be the difference come the reckoning.
