West League Update - West 2 - 23 April 2018

With each week that passes, we're more amazed at just how competitive West 2 remains, and this last set of results just makes it even more wonderful.  A set of results which leaves us with four Clubs at the top separated by 1 point.  Yes, some have played more than others, but with four Saturdays of the season remaining, it’s just fantastic that we have a Championship and promotion battle with so much competitive interest.

Despite losing to Millbrae at the weekend, Lenzie are now top, thanks to a lose bonus point and a better points difference over Cumnock who won at home against Cumbernauld.  Strathendrick move up to third with a victory over Uddingston, whilst Paisley are down to fourth following a weekend off.

Lenzies last game of the season comes this weekend against Strathaven and Cumnock visit Uddingston, both title challengers will be looking for wins.  Game of the day though takes place at Fintry when Strathendrick welcome Paisley.  This is a must win for Paisley if they have any hope of the Championship or the second promotion place, however they’ve struggled a bit in their last three games, with a tight win against Cumbernauld followed with defeats to Endrick and then Clydebank.

With five games still to play, Endrick are our favourites for the title, but a loss on Saturday will open things up as Endrick still have a visit to Millbrae to navigate - three wins on the bounce and a narrow loss to Cumnock suggest Millbrae have now got a squad who can take points off any Club in the league.

We’re currently going for Endrick to win the league with Cumnock in second - but come Saturday evening we may have to revisit this.

At the foot, wins for Millbrae, Clydebank and Loch Lomond means that WD now find themselves in the second drop spot.  With further points deductions from the Championship Committee, the second relegation place looks to be between WD and Millbrae, with Millbrae three point ahead and three games in hand.

Millbrae have six game remaining, kicking off with Birkmyre this Saturday, but they’re a couple of Saturdays short of fitting the rest of the games in so have been allocated midweek games, including WD on Wednesday 16th.

Loch Lomonds victory over Birkmyre ensures they’ll be playing West 2 next season, as they are now 18 points ahead of WD with only three game remaining. This weekend there’s the A82 el Classico (as described by @disvalentine) where Clydebank will be looking for a single point so they join their neighbours in West 2 safety with their trip to Bonhill.

It’s looking increasingly likely that it’ll be WD who join Birkmyre in West 3 next season if the second relegation spot becomes active, and that’s coming down to a single game in National 3 on 5th May between Haddington and Dalziel (the Clubs currently 11th & 12th in the league).  If Dalziel are relegated, then it will be two Clubs down from West 2 to West 3.

Perthshire have played their compliment of league games and finished with 20 points.  Both Haddington and Dalziel are on 17 points, so a win for either means they stay up.  A draw, and they could both be relegated.
