Greenock Wanderers are top having picked up bonus points in each of their three games, the weekends being a comfortable 45-0 win against Stewartry. Saturday will surely see a different challenge for them as they visit Glens.
Glens are third having only picked up one bonus point in their three victories, and will no doubt count themselves fortunate to come away with the win at the weekend, which came courtesy of a last play penalty kick at East Kilbride.
Annan are in second following a 27-19 victory away at Strathendrick. It must have been some half time talk as they found themselves trailing 19-6 at the break, so they too will be counting their blessings.
Glens v Greenock is going to be tough, but so too will Annans next game as they host fifth placed East Kilbride, who’s only league defeat has come courtesy of that last minute penalty on Saturday.
Following their 34-9 victory over Dalziel, Irvine are one point ahead of EK, and this week they travel to Cambuslang who had a comfortable 55-19 win at Cumnock. It was an important result for Cambuslang as they were well beaten by Greenock last week, and lost on the first weekend in their derby game at East Kilbride (though only by a point). Irvines only defeat came at Cumnock (also by a point), so this too has the makings of a decent contest.
Garnock picked up their first league victory of season with a 22-7 win against Kilmarnock. Garnock have already played two of the top three, and this week they travel to Dalziel Park, so things aren’t getting much easier for them. It’s a must win for both if they want to remain in touch with the leaders.
Kilmarnock and Stewartry are at the foot of the table, both have home games so will be keen to make the most of the advantage and look to pick up their first league wins of the season. Stewartry host Cumnock who are coming off the back of their defeat against Cambuslang, whilst Kilmarnock host Strathendrick who have only won one from three, finding themselves in a similar position to Garnock of having played two of the top three.
We have three Clubs at the top of West 2 with 100% records, each with three bonus point victories.
Lenzie sit top with a points difference of 112, following their 40 points to 7 victory away at Wigtownshire. Bishopton and Oban Lorne maintained their 100% records with victories over Loch Lomond and Helensburgh.
Lenzie host Paisley this weekend , who lost out to Strathaven on Saturday. It was Paisleys second league defeat, so it’s a must win for them if they want to be competing at the sharp end.
Bishopton host Clydebank who ended Uddingstons firecracker of a start to the season (points for = 185). Having led 17-5 in the first half, Uddy would have been looking to continue their winning record, but a barnstorming second half gave Clydebank a 37-29 victory, moving them up to 6th place. Repeat the second half performance for a full 80 minutes on Saturday and Clydebank could move up another couple of places.
Oban have toughie at fifth placed Strathaven, whose only defeat so far was a 7-5 result at Clydebank.
Following their defeat at Clydebank, Uddy sit in fourth and this week they host Wigtownshire. Shire are currently 10th with only one point, but their three games to date have been against potential title challengers. They must surely start picking up points soon - it’s just that this Saturday might not be the kick-start they’re looking for.
The Cumbernauld v Millbrae game was off as the visitors were unable to field a team. Millbrae had multiple points deductions last season, so they will need to be careful as the weekends non-fulfillment has already earned them a 3 point deduction, so no warnings for them this season. Millbrae are therefore at the foot of the table behind Loch Lomond.
Lomond visit Cumbernauld on Saturday, whilst Millbrae host Helensburgh who are also looking for their first league win.
Lochaber sit top of West 3 with three wins from three, their victory on Saturday coming against Birkmyre.
Uni Medics are in second place after a 55-12 home win against Shawlands.
Third and fourth are WD and Cowal who are also unbeaten, but have played one game less than Lochaber. Both were away last weekend and had comfortable victories, WD 36-6 at Moffat and Cowal 66-17 at Hyndland.
This sets up the big game this weekend as Lochabers visits to Coatbridge to take on WD. A win for Lochaber and they’ll be well clear at the top, whilst a bonus point win for WD will see them top of the table come 5pm on Saturday.
Clydesdale have withdrawn from the league not having played a game, so we’re down to a league of 10. This will result in two Clubs sitting idle some weekends - this week that’s Uni Medics and Cowal.
Our other games this weekend sees Mull visit Birkmyre who both have a win and a loss a piece. PSG host Moffat and Shawlands host Hyndland - between the four of them, there’s only one league win, so a chance to pick up some valuable points.
In this weeks Results Predictor Challenge, our success rate improved, going up to 67% - 10 from 15, though across West 1 games it was only 3 from 6.
In the wider Challenge, four entries scored 83% in the West 1 games (5 from 6) - John Carson, Connor Ferris, Stuart Docherty and Ewan Callaghan.
Across the three leagues, the weekends top scorer was Stuart Docherty who scored 80% (12 from 15). Our Random Results Generator scored only 33%.
It appears we caused some consternation when the consolidated predictions were published, as not one of our entrants gave Clydebank a chance of pulling off a result against Uddingston - it would have been interesting to hear the half time team talk when they were down 17-12 - perhaps we could bottle the essence of it and sell it on.
Anyway, we’ll be publishing another set of predictions later in the week, with one of the difficult decisions being who to go for when Clydebank visit Bishopton.
