West 1 Update - 13 January 2017

The top 3 in West 1 all won last weekend, which means the title contest is still bubbling along.

Both Newton Stewart and Carrick won with bonus points, whilst their match report suggests East Kilbride will be thankful they came away with the win.  Newton Stewart are now five points of East Kilbride, and with a game in hand, are strong favourites for the title.

This weekend, East Kilbride travel to Irvine, whilst Carrick visit Bladnoch Park to take on the pace setters.  These are both must win games for the chasing pair, else they'll surely be out of contention.  East Kilbride will need to exercise caution, as Irvine only lost by two points at fourth placed Garnock last Saturday, so it's going to be tight, and we're going for a home win in this one.

In the Newton Stewart v Carrick match, we're also going to favour the home side, but it was a 25 point each draw in their earlier encounter, so this could go either way.

At the foot of the table, Helensburgh lost out to Newtown Stewart, whilst Oban went down 6 points to 3 against a visiting Annan team.  Kilmarnock lost to Carrick, but they are 16 points clear of Helensburgh, who only have five games remaining.  Oban host Helensburgh this weekend, so it's a must win for Helensburgh, if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

With Dalziel beating Livingston in National 3 at the weekend, it's looking increasingly likely that only one West team will be relegated from the Nationals this season, so only one down from West 1 as well.  A win for Oban against Helensburgh would surely be enough to guarantee West 1 rugby for them for next season.
