At the start of Saturday, Greenock Wanderers led West 1 and we fully expected this still to be the case come 5pm. However, Kilmarnock had other ideas and demonstrated to us, and many others, that Greenock are not going to have it easy if they wish to lift the West 1 title.
By all accounts, Greenock were well worth their half-time lead, and despite going further behind in the second-half, the young lads from Kilmarnock rallied strongly, exposing a few chinks in the Greenock armour. It sounds like the locals got a wee bit excited as they watched something special from the young lads Bellsland who are maturing quickly and proved with their comeback that they will be able to threaten anyone in the league. At the final whistle it was a draw at 31 points a piece.
The draw at Bellsland means that East Kilbrides 45-10 win in the Lanarkshire derby at Dalziel puts them top of the league, two points ahead of Greenock. At the foot, Dalziel are still ahead of Kilmarnock, but there's only 1 point in it now.
Kilmarnock travel to Cumnock on Saturday, whilst Dalziel travel to Greenock, so there could be a shuffling of positions at the foot this weekend. If Dalziel can copy Kilmarnock and take anything from their game at Fort Matilda, then it will really blow the title race wide open.
Wins for Garnock and Glens means they both move up a place (ahead of Cambuslang) into third & fourth. Garnock won 50-10 against Strathendrick (RefCam footage), with Glens winning 82-12 against Cambuslang. Cambuslang drop from third to sixth, with Annan also moving ahead of them following their 42 nil win against Cumnock.
In the final West 1 game of the weekend, Stewartrys victory over Irvine moves them up a couple of places, who are now only two points behind Irvine.
If the forecast is right for the weekend, there might be a number of postponements , but after a first look at the schedule, we’re going for wins for Glens and Greenock. However there’s a number of interesting games across the rest of the Clubs which will take a bit more thinking about. Leaders East Kilbride host third place Garnock, whilst Cambuslang in 6th host 5th place Annan, both of which will have a big say in how the top half looks at the full-time whistle.
West 2:
Uddys 31-26 win over Strathaven (read our review of the game here – and watch the video to see perhaps try of the season) keeps them in pole position ahead of Lenzie who did battle with third place Oban Lorne at the weekend. This one also sounds like a cracker of West Regional game as although Lenzie got themselves into an early lead, Oban got back into things in the second half only to come up a little short.
This weekend the top two face each other as Lenzie host Uddy. Between them, they've scored nearly 500 points in 11 games, with both picking up try bonus points in all games – this should be a cracker.
The early running for the title looks to be between Uddy, Lenzie and Oban, but there have been several close results in the league, so a poor performance on a Saturday could end up being costly.
Bishopton and Clydebank remain in 4th and 5th following victories over Paisley and Helensburgh, again both look to have to have been pretty closely fought contests. Despite their losses, Strathaven and Helensburgh remain in 6th & 7th.
A win at Cumbernauld for Wigtownshire means they swap places with Paisley. This looks to have been another game that went down to the wire, with Shire winning with a penalty goal in the final few moments.
In addition to the top of the table clash, this weekend sees plenty of other close to call games: Strathaven host Bishopton (6th v 4th), Helensburgh travel to Wigtownshire (7th v 8th), and Cumbernauld make the trip to Paisley (9th v 10th), so there's plenty of potential close contests on offer across the league. In the other games, Clydebank host Millbrae and Oban host Loch Lomond (assuming the flooding receded) for what should be a couple of home wins.
At the foot of the table, Lomond travelled to Millbrae where the home side won 31-20, which means they swap places.
West 3:
In West 3, WD remain top with five wins from five and five bonus points following their 40 points to 7 win over Mull (our review here). Cowal are now clear in second after a convincing 61-3 win over Lochaber. The Uni Medics 36-20 win over Hyndland moves them up to third, swapping places with Lochaber.
Birkmyre move up to sixth after their 55 nil win at Police Scotland Glasgow, whilst Shawlands moved up to sixth with a 53-7 win against Moffat.
(Update: SRU website now showing the PSG v Birkmyre score as 28 nil in Birkmyres favour - PSG only had 11 players, so match recorded as "Development Game", with try bonus result being awarded to Birkmyre.)
The league looks to be between WD and Cowal, however, Mull, Lochaber, Uni Medics and Birkmyre are not to be trifled with and will take points of the leaders if they are not on top form.
Pick of this weekends games is probably the Birkmyre v Cowal match.
