Despite having played each other over the previous few rounds, the top three in West 2 had started to open a bit of a gap at the top, but with Bishopton visiting Uddy on Saturday, it was their chance to get themselves in among the contenders. However it was not to be for the Holmpark men as they went down to a heavy 48 nil defeat.
Oban Lorne and Lenzie also had bonus point wins to keep the margin the same between the top 3, but at 16 points behind the leaders, Bishopton (who are still in fourth) are probably now out of contention for the title.
Leaders Lenzie had a more tricky game than they would have been expecting in their derby match against struggling Cumbernauld. 98.2% of us had it as a Lenzie win, so we’re pretty certain that having had some big wins across the season, Lenzie would have expected a bigger scoreline than 24-3, but a bonus point win is a bonus point win and you move onto the next one.
From Cumbernaulds perspective, they look at the table seeing themselves third from bottom, but having conceded only 144 points in 6 games, will realise that if they can improve their “points for” column (only 61) then there’s probably a few more wins available to them.
Lenzie might by quietly disappointed with their scoreline, but Oban must be pleasantly surprised with the margin of their victory over 5th place Clydebank - 71-7. With victories over Uddy and Bishopton this season, Clydebank must have fancied their chances of taking something from this game, but having lost to Loch Lomond last week, and now Oban, they probably find themselves in similar position to Bishopton - out of contention for the title, but comfortably ahead of the bottom of the table.
The title challenge is now surely between the top 3. Lenzie this weekend visit Helensburgh, who had got up to 7th place, but their non-fulfilment in the weekends game means a three point deduction drops them a place to 8th – welcoming league leaders with a squad that’s down on numbers probably isn’t the next game they wanted. This should be an away win.
Oban welcome Bishopton, who will be fearing that they may be on to similar treatment to Clydebank, it’s tough to see the visitors taking anything from this game.
Uddingston host Millbrae, who despite the Predictor odds having them as underdogs, came away with a 27 points a piece draw at Paisley on Saturday. The draws not enough to move Millbrae off the foot of the table, but Paisley do move onto the same points as Helensburgh in joint 8th place. It’s difficult to see Millbrae upsetting the odds again this weekend.
Paisley will be looking at their visit to Dillichip this weekend as a chance to jump ahead of Helensburgh, but Loch Lomond are coming onto a game, and only just lost out 20-10 on their travels to Wigtownshire on Saturday. We’re going to go with home advantage on this one and a Lomond win. A bonus point for Lomond will put them ahead of Cumbernauld, who have the weekend off.
Shires win on Saturday makes it five victories in a row for them moving them up to fifth place, one point behind Bishopton. Clydebank in sixth are two behind Shire, but they have two games in hand, and this weekend they meet one another.
Clydebank got off to a good start to the season, but defeats in the last two weeks has had a big impact on their title challenge. This will be a tough match, as it’s Wigtownshire who will be coming with a fair bit of confidence. We’re going with home advantage, but it could go either way.
We’ve got three at the top duking it out for the title, and we have three at the bottom fighting hard to avoid an automatic drop, but then we have six in the middle separated by only 7 points hoping that they can do enough to come out the right side of any cruel, but as yet unknown, Super6 inspired restructuring options.
