West League Update (West 3) - 23rd October 2018

The big West 3 game at the weekend saw leaders WD make the trip to second-placed Cowal.  Both have been scoring plenty of points whilst not conceding too many. It had the potential to be tight, even though the Predictor odds had it down as a comfortable WD win. WD did win, but at 24-5, it wasn’t as dominant as some of their earlier season results.

The win puts WD 11 points ahead of Cowal, who drop to third.  Uni Medics move into second following their 109 points to 10 win over Moffat. This means Medics are nine points behind WD, but they do have a game in hand, and crucially they have yet to face each other.

This weekend WD host Shawlands who lost 33-5 to Birkmyre last weekend.  However, in the previous weeks, they’ve run Lochaber close in Fort William and had a comfortable win over Moffat.  This should be a comfortable win for WD, but Shawlands have demonstrated they should not be taken lightly.

The Medics have the difficult trip to Fort William to take on fifth-placed Lochaber.   Lochaber have won each of their home games this season so it will be no easy task for the Medics.  The Medics are the leagues top point scorers, averaging over 50 points a game, so the stats are in their favour - away win on this one, but it could go either way.

Cowal visit Police Scotland on Saturday - PSG have played four having won two of them, but have also been deducted 7 points. The biggest issue appears to be getting a full strength team on the pitch. This should be a win for Cowal, but if PSG get things lined up, it could be close.

PSG were supposed to host Mull at the weekend, but Mull were unable to travel so have been deducted three points, which drops them to sixth, now 6 points behind Lochaber.

Birkmyres 33 points to 5 win at Shawlands moves them up a couple of places to fourth, on the same points as Cowal. Birkmyre have the weekend off.

The two teams at the foot of the table face each other this weekend in their search for their first victory of the season - Hyndland are on two points and Moffat on one.  Neither has scored many points this season so this will be a chance to get things underway. We expect this could be tight, so we’re going with home advantage being the telling factor.

WD must now be firm favourites for the title, but the Medics have a game in hand, and they have still to face each other twice, so it’s by no means over.

The fight for third looks to be between Cowal, Birkmyre and Lochaber, but they’ll not be giving up the chase, as from what we’ve seen this season, they could take points off them to close the gap.
