With only a few weeks remaining, there's plenty of action left in both West 1 and West 2, and not to be outdone, the weekends result in the top of the table clash in West 3 made thing just as exciting in the title battle there too.
WD had a comfortable win against Glasgow Uni Medics a few weeks ago, but right from the off on Saturday, Uni Medics let it be known they were out for revenge, their first score coming in about 60 seconds. This was a game of high intensity and plenty of action, where both sides had spells of possession and territory.
Poor discipline got the better of WD in the first half, but they managed to restrict the scoreline to 10 - 5 at half-time, despite spending 8 minutes playing with 13 players.
Medics scored early doors again second half, and began to exert a great deal of pressure, but the WD defence was resilient. The advantage then switched and it was WD who started to pile on the pressure, adding two tries in a dominant final 20 minutes to give a final score of 17-15.
It was a good hard game of rugby, where both sides had their chances, but it was probably the defences which had the biggest impact on the game.
The result means that WD sit atop the table with a single point advantage - both have two games left to play.
WD play Birkmyre at home on 6th April and then away on 20th April.
Medics are away to Shawlands on 6th April and then host Mull on 13th April.
A couple of bonus point wins, and WD will be champions and playing West 2 next season. Fail to pick up two bonus point wins, and they must wait to see if the Medics slip up.
This looks like going down to the final game of the season.
The battle for top spot is close, and so too is the race behind. There's currently two points between 3rd, 4th and 5th - Cowal are on 36 points, Lochaber on 35 and Birkmyre 34. Both Cowal and Birkmyre had bonus point wins last weekend, 30-24 v Hyndland and 56 -19 v Mull respectively.
Cowal don't have a game this weekend, so could find themselves down a couple of places as Birkmyre host Lochaber, with whoever wins moving into third spot.
This is Lochabers last game of the season, but Birkmyre have another three games after this week, but as we note above, two of these are against WD.
Cowals final two games are Mull away before hosting Moffat on the last game of the season. So as with the title challenge, the competition for third place looks to be going down to the last game of the season.
