West League Update (West 3) - 6th November 2018

A limited fixture card in West 3 on Saturday, made shorter by the stormy weather which created travel issues for the Mull v Cowal game.

A 39-13 win for Uni Medics against Birkmyre solidifies their second place. Medics are now just four points behind WD, with them each having played 7 games. WD have a points difference of 276, Uni Medics 266. They have yet to face one another, with the first contest not scheduled until 2nd March and the return fixture on 23rd March.  They're well clear of the rest of the field, but the title race should be very interesting.

Hyndland picked up their second win on the bounce with a 29-24 victory over Lochaber on the main pitch at Scotstoun. The win brings Hyndland onto the same points as Mull, but Mull have four games in hand. Lochaber gained a couple of bonus points from the game which moves them ahead of both Cowal and Birkmyre, though they have played more games.

This Saturday Lochaber are again making the trip down to Glasgow, this time to take on Shawlands who had a 38-17 win over Police Scotland Glasgow at the weekend. Lochaber have struggled in recent weeks, with only one win from five, which was against Shawlands in Fort William – 20-17. Recent form suggests Shawlands will take this one.

PSG themselves have the "awkward" task of visiting league leaders WD on Saturday. WD are scoring on average over 45 points a game, and have conceded only 50 in their seven outings, so this result should not be in doubt.  For PSG though, this game is not so much about the scoreline as it is about getting it played. This did happen with their game against Shawlands, but with only 10 players available at 2:00 pm on Saturday, only just.  Three non-fulfillments so far this season for PSG means that one more and they could be looking at leaving the league.

Hyndland will be looking to make it three wins in a row, but with a trip to Birkmyre it will be a difficult task. Birkmyre have won four from seven, and aren't conceding too many points.  Hyndland however are a team playing with a growing confidence, so shouldn't be written off.  We're going for a home win, but if Hyndland do make it three in a row, they'll close the gap to Birkmyre to perhaps a couple of points (depending on bonus points gained).

The final game this weekend sees Mull visiting Moffat. Moffat are still looking for their first win of the season, whilst Mull have won three from five, but they have been playing short on numbers in some games. If Mull can travel with enough players, this should be an away win – travel short of numbers though, and who knows.
