World Rugby 7s - Round 4 - Sydney

Following their fifth placed finish in New Zealand last weekend, Scotland play in the opening match of Round 4 in this years World Rugby 7s with a game against Spain.

Scotland are currently in 7th place in the tournament standings, with Spain only three places behind. With New Zealand and Wales making up the other Pool C opponents, it's going to be a tough round of matches to qualify for the main Cup competition.

Scotland lose their opening game in Sydney in the last play of the game, 10-7.  Plenty of possession, but not much attacking intent.

Well if the game against Spain was poor fayre, then looking at the other two results in the pool, things didn't get any better.

A young Wales squad who have been struggling to come to terms with the tournament to date (27 points behind Scotland in the standings after only three rounds), should have been, if not comfortable, at least a win, but no, Scotlands insipid display against Spain was followed up with a 26 - 12 defeat. At least we managed to score a couple of tries in this game, which is more that can be said about the final pool game - 42 nil against New Zealand.

Three defeats on day 1 gave us a Challenge Trophy Quarter final match against Canada.  So after the disappointment of Day 1, this was an opportunity to get thing back on track as Canada have had a slow start to this years series.

However, Day 2 didn't get any better as the Canada game gave us a 35-21 defeat, followed up with a 26-12 defeat against Samoa in the 13th place semi-final.

All the great work in New Zealand last week with a fifth place finish (picking up 13 points in the standings), has been pretty much undone by coming in last in this round and earning a single point.
