West League Update (West 3) - 28th November 2018

As with West 2, the action has been a bit sparse in West 3 over November due to the Autumn Tests.  We’ve only had seven competitive games played plus a couple of “development” matches.

The “development” games happen where one Club is short of players, but instead of calling off and facing a points deduction, a game is played (where a minimum number of players criteria is met – 10 we think), but we’re not sure what to make of these “development” games.

Yes, they can form an important part of keeping Clubs and players playing, but should they really be included as results in a competition – i.e. Glasgow Uni Medics game v PSG is shown as a 28 nil victory in Uni Medics favour.  WD are scheduled to face PSG in their last game of the season – what’s to happen if WD need a win for the Championship title and promotion, and by a margin wider than 28 points?

At the start of the month Waysiders Drumpellier were top of the table, but they had no games during the month, so Glasgow Uni Medics had the chance to move to the top of the league.  The Medics took this chance with three wins (one being a development game), including Saturdays 37 nil win away at Cowal which moves them six points clear of WD.  WD do have two games in hand so there’s still plenty to play for in the West 3 championship battle.

They’re both in action this weekend, Uni Medics visiting Shawlands and WD hosting Moffat.  This should see a couple of wins for the leading pair, but Medics should perhaps be wary of Shawlands as they had a big win recently against Mull.

Lochaber are still in third place, but their game at Mull on Saturday was recorded as a development game as they were short of players.  If numbers are getting a bit tight for Lochaber, a trip to Glasgow to take on Birkmyre this Saturday probably isn’t what they were needing.

Birkmyre had two games during November, including Saturdays win away at Moffat.  A win over Lochaber on Saturday will see the two Clubs swap places.   We’re going for a Birkmyre win, but if Lochaber travel with a full squad, this could be a tight one.

The final West 3 tie of the weekend sees Hyndland make the trip to Cowal.  There was just one game apiece during November for these two, a win for Hyndland against Lochaber, whilst Cowal lost to Uni Medics on Saturday.

Cowal are 6th in the league and 7 points ahead of Hyndland.  They have a stronger points difference with both superior points for and against totals.  However we have to go back to the start of October to find Cowals last win, whilst Hyndland have picked up a couple of wins in this timeframe.

We’ll go with a home win, but won’t be surprised to see Hyndland take the victory.  A bonus point win for Hyndland will move them onto the same points tally as Mull, whilst a bonus point win for Cowal could move them onto the same points as Birkmyre.
