With Glasgow Uni Medics playing in the West Bowl final on Saturday, WD had the chance to retake the lead in the Championship battle. Fort William was the venue for 3rd v 2nd place contest, with Lochaber as the hosts. We watched their game earlier in the season, which WD won 41-10, but Lochaber were in the game until they ran out of subs, so this looked like being a decent contest.
WD won this one 32-12, keeping their 100% record – nine bonus-point wins from nine. Both WD and the Uni Medics are scoring loads of points and conceding not many. They’ve played the same number of games, but this result puts WD ahead by four points. WD have got their noses ahead, but they’ve still to got each other home and away, so still loads to play for.
The only other game played in West 3 last weekend was the Hyndland v Shawlands derby that took place at Lochinch. Shawlands were the higher place team, but the Predictor Challenge had this one was pretty evenly split.
Despite the weather, we went along to Lochinch to watch what was a pretty evenly matched contest. We watch Hyndland earlier in the season when they struggled against Cowal, but what we saw on Saturday was a much stronger team, in-fact despite the constant rain, it was a decent and entertaining game.
Hyndland scored a couple of tries in the first fifteen minutes and looked like they would be too strong for Shawlands, but Shawlands came back with a try of their own and we had a bit of a ding-dong battle with plenty of big hits in defence. At 12-5 at halftime, there was only one score in it, and by full time, both teams had added another try each, so still only one score it as it finished up 17 - 10.
On this performance, both Clubs will cause problems for opponents for the rest of the season, but we’ll need to wait till after the Christmas break to test this theory as both have this weekend off.
This weekends games sees leaders WD host Bowl finalists Birkmyre. Birkmyre are sitting in fourth, but are well off the pace, so we’re going for a home win.
Uni Medics host Mull, whose game against Cowal was off at the weekend (Cowal have been deducted three points as a result). Mull have struggled on the road, with only a win against Birkmyre, so again we’re going with a home win here.
Cowals three-point deduction for their weekends non-fulfilment drops them behind Mull in the table, so they’ll be looking to regain this place again this weekend when they host Moffat. Moffat themselves are still looking for their first win of the season, and with Cowal only being a couple of places ahead of them in the table, this could be an opportunity for them, especially if they’re struggling for numbers. We’re going a home win.
The weekends final game has Police Scotland hosting Lochaber. PSG failed to raise a team again at the weekend, making it their fourth non-fulfilment this season. Cowal have been docked three points for their weekend non-fulfilment, but PSG have not (yet). It will be interesting to see what the Championship Committee decide here – it was claimed at the start of the season that four non-fulfilment would mean removal from the league.
We’re going for a Lochaber win, but we’ll need to keep an eye on the Championship Committees decision, and whether or not the fixture still exists come Saturday.
